Is Virgin River losing a resident?

Tim Matheson, who plays Vernon “Doc” Mullins on the Netflix series, has joined the cast of ABC’s upcoming spinoff 9-1-1: Nashville, our sister site Deadline reports.

NCIS: Los Angeles vet Chris O’Donnell stars in the offshoot, which is described as “a high-octane procedural about our heroic first responders, as well as their family saga of power and glamour set in one of America’s most diverse and dynamic cities.” The ensemble also includes Jessica Capshaw (Grey’s Anatomy), Kimberly Williams-Paisley (Nashville, According to Jim) and singer LeAnn Rimes, among others.

So how will Matheson’s new gig on 9-1-1: Nashville impact his role on the Netflix hit? The actor is set to play the role of Edward, described as “Southern old money and utterly ruthless,” in just a recurring capacity on the ABC drama. As for Virgin River, filming was completed a few months ago on Season 7, which does not yet have a premiere date, and while the show received an early renewal for Season 8, production on those episodes probably won’t begin for a while. So Matheson’s two roles aren’t likely to overlap, allowing him to shoot 9-1-1: Nashville during his hiatus from the Netflix drama.

When Virgin River does eventually return for Season 7, Matheson’s Doc will have plenty to be worried about: Sara Canning (The Vampire Diaries) has joined the show as Victoria, an ex-cop who now works for the state medical board and comes to Virgin River to investigate Doc’s practice.
