On February 4, General Hospital star Cameron Mathison (Drew) shared some pics from a hospital visit on Instagram captioned: “Six-year cancer checkup day. Blood work, CT scan, X-rays. Grateful to be here. I’ll keep you posted.” Almost a week later, the actor posted a video on Instagram where he apologized for not keeping his fans updated as promised. But at least he had some good news to report!

Health and Happiness

Back in 2019, Mathison revealed that he had been diagnosed with renal cell carcinoma, a type of kidney cancer. He underwent surgery to remove the tumor along with 20 percent of his right kidney. Over the following years, the actor has continued to keep fans in the loop as he has received regular checkups, publicly sharing his progress and test results while also urging them to take care of their own health.

In the video he posted on February 10, Mathison apologized for his bed head before addressing the camera. “I’ve been getting a lot of questions about — first of all, let’s pull this together, Mathison,” he grinned, adjusting his shirt collar. “About my cancer scans, the six-year cancer scans. Yes, I just got out of bed, but what the heck. I just wanted to let everybody know that I’m very, very, very, very grateful that they all came back clear. My kidney function is actually even better. It’s improved since last year. I am six years cancer-free, and I could not be more grateful.”

Mathison, who first rose to soap stardom playing Ryan Lavery on All My Children from 1998 to 2002 and 2003 to 2011 and has appeared in numerous television movies for The Hallmark Channel and Great American Family, joined the cast of GH as the new Drew Cain in 2021. Over the course of his career, the actor has amassed numerous fans who were eager to hear some good news after his most recent checkup.

“Also grateful for all the texts and emails and DMs and questions about how I’m doing,” Mathison declared at the close of his video. “I put out there that I would let you know, and I guess I never did. I didn’t really necessarily think that people would be waiting to hear about it, but that’s so sweet. And that feels very, very good. So, six years cancer-free. Super grateful.”
