Coronation Street fans were seen issuing the same statement over Gareth Pierce as his portrayal of Todd Grimshaw continues to break hearts in the long-running show.

As viewers of the ITV soap are seeing, undertaker Todd is disappearing before his loved ones’ eyes as he suffers abuse at the hands of his new husband, Theo Silverton.

Theo came into Todd’s life back in March last year following a random meeting on the cobbles, and despite complications around Theo’s family life, with Theo revealed to be married with two children, his romance with Todd was quick to progress, and the undertaker soon found himself involved in a hard-hitting, coercively controlling, and abusive relationship.

After months of being controlled, as well as physically and mentally abused by his partner, Todd appeared to see what was really going on with the help of Billy Mayhew, and agreed to leave Theo. But when the vicar tried to help in his former boyfriend’s escape, he was killed in a horror multi-vehicle crash.

Over recent episodes, Theo decided to break things off with Todd, but still tracked him on his phone to show up wherever Todd was as a form of control. It wasn’t long before they were back together and in a shock twist, Theo sprung a surprise wedding on Todd, with him having revealed to Gary Windass that he’d never cancelled the registry office from when they were planning to tie the knot.

Gary was more than happy to support Theo, with just him and his wife, Maria Windass, in attendance as Theo was seen leading a blind folding Todd into the registry office, where Gary and his wife, Maira, were waiting as their witnesses. Despite Todd appearing horrified, he went ahead with the nuptials, even overcoming a wobble during the vows.

They headed back to the street for a post-wedding celebration in the Rovers Return, with Todd’s friends surprised by the unexpected nuptials. Since then, Theo’s abuse towards Todd has only continued, only this time his vile behaviour towards his partner has been caught, first by George Shuttleworth, who has since spread the word between those who know and love Todd.

During a rare Sunday episode of Corrie, on March 29, Todd saw some of his friends gathered together and wanted to know what was going on. Meanwhile, Sarah Platt was seen paying Gary a visit where she shared what she had found out with her former partner.

While struggling to believe the information, Gary later saw a scared Todd nervously heading back to the flat, offering to accompay hime inside. He then too caught Theo shouting abuse towards his new husband. As he spoke to Gary, Theo shut down any possibility that he had been abusing his partner.

However, Gary said: “If I find out it’s true…” alluding to Theo’s abuse, before warning that he is also capable of violence. “I’m onto you, Theo. We all are,” he added.

But it’s still Gareth that is winning praise for his portrayal of Todd in the soap, and think he should be winning awards for the storyline. @mitchelld199 said: “It’s a shame the soap awards were cancelled. Gareth Pierce deserves awards #Corrie.” @gertieperkins8 replied: “He’s just been quietly putting in this incredible performance for a year or so, and he needs to be recognised for it.”

@sarahlawson84 echoed: “It’s such a shame the BSA’s were cancelled cos Gareth Pierce should sweep up! He’s been incredible during this whole storyline. Hopefully he’ll get the #Corrie NTA nod, which will be tough ask in itself.” @craggsy82 wrote: “On a serious note, Gareth Pierce has done a phenomenal job. #corrie.”

@boyz_allowed added: “#Corrie these past few episodes have been very good. All the George/Glenda/Christine scenes are great. Summer has massively grown on me without Billy. Bringing Sarah and Gary closer to the story is wise and Gareth is playing a blinder as Todd!”
