Coronation Street fans have been left baffled by Mal Roper as his immediate future on the cobbles was confirmed before his recent uncomfortable scenes.

As those who follow the ITV soap know, Mal’s unexpected arrival in Weatherfield earlier this year has caused nothing but trouble for Bernie Winter ever since, after taking an unreciprocated shine to the cafe worker.

But, when he was thought to have been attacked, Mal’s terrifying behaviour towards Bernie appeared to be over. However, as is soap, her hell seems to just be beginning as during the latest visit to the cobbles on Thursday (March 26), he stepped up his campaign to try and win Bernie over, in more sinister fashion.

Bernie was seen visiting Mal in his hotel room, after he forced her to come to the Chariot Square Hotel and sleep with him so he will drop the charges against her husband, Dev Alahan, after he claimed he was the one who attacked him. But as viewers, and Bernie, know, it was her son, Kit Green, who was behind the altercation with her stalker.

As she knocked on Mal’s door, Ryan Connor looked on, concerned. Once inside Mal’ room, she downed some wine, deliberately ate a cheese and onion sandwich to bide her time and try and put Mal off the idea of being intimate with her. She also made it clear that she was only there to protect her family, but Mal admitted his belief that one day she will reciprocate his ‘romantic’ feelings.

However, things soon escalated, with Mal’s temper rising as he accused Bernie of dragging things out, and when she mentioned that he was still grieving the loss of his marriage, he hit out, accusing her of “patronising” him and even of “stringing me along from the get go”.

He started to insult her and as his behaviour become more erratic, Bernie picked up a corkscrew and held it between her fingers, ready to defend herself, just as Ryan Connor burst into the room and held Mal back, telling Bernie to call the police. She bargained with Mal to get the charges dropped against Dev, to which he agreed, before leaving in tears.

But it seems Corrie fans are confused over the purpose of Mal’s involvement in life in Weatherfield. @SHED8888 said: “I still don’t understand why Mal was texting Roy pretending to be a woman before his character was introduced. Has this ever been explained?? #corrie.” @Wee_Westie29 commented: “I wonder if Roy will get the blame for the whole Mal/Bernie situation as he was the one in contact with “Alice” in the first place #Corrie #CoronationStreet @itvcorrie.”

@Fake_TV_Chef wrote: “The Mal story line has as many holes as the Becky one. Does Alice exist or not? If not then why did he go to the hotel to drown his sorrows over his wife leaving him (where he met Bernie). If she does exist then the cops should’ve questioned her about his attack. #Corrie.”

But there was also praise for the actor, Tim Treloar, playing him. @mybooktwt posted: “I must say that the guy who plays Mal plays the unhinged freak perfectly! #corrie.” @GinaLouLoves wrote: “Mal is so scarily unhinged, the actor is amazing #corrie.” @mell0ween added: “Out of all the hundreds of nasty villains we’ve got on #Corrie at the moment, Mal genuinely makes me feel sick every time he comes on screen. Actor is doing a great job because his character is revolting.”

Meanwhile, it’s been confirmed Mal isn’t going anywhere just yet. Spoilers for next week reveal that Mal calls at No.7 and drops a bombshell on Dev Alahan. Turning to Bernie, Mal tells her that once Dev has dumped her, he’ll be waiting in the wings., leaving Dev stunned.

Later, Dev spells out to DC Kit Green that he knows he attacked Mal, what will he do? Later, when Dev calls in and tells Bernie he’d like to take her for dinner and forget about Mal, she’s thrilled. As Dev and Bernie head out for the evening, Mal watches them from the shadows
